Senior Health
As the population ages, there is a growing need for better knowledge on senior health care. Most people want to approach old age with good health. Today’s senior citizens are living longer and living healthier. That is not only because of improved medical care, but because senior citizens are more aware of what it takes to be healthy.
Natural Changes
The reality is, no matter how healthy a person is, no matter how much they exercise or how much they eat a good diet or do all the right things, the body ages. Just like a 40-year-old person sees physical changes and health problems never dreamed of as a 20-year-old person, the 70-year-old person no longer has the body of a 40-year-old. The years of living take a toll on the body. The body begins to wear down. Bones become less strong. The heart becomes less efficient, needing to beat harder and faster to get the same work done. Women go through menopause. Both sexes see a decrease in sexual function. The body itself becomes weaker and more susceptible to developing chronic diseases.
Of course, no two people are alike. Bodies will age differently. A wife will find herself fighting high cholesterol and high blood pressure while her husband who lives a similar lifestyle and eats a similar diet might suffer, instead, from kidney ailments. Family history will dictate a person’s health as much as lifestyle choices.
Living into a Healthy Old Age
It is never too late to start living a healthy life. Research has shown that giving up bad health habits will have positive effects on a person’s life. No matter what your age is right now, the time to begin practicing a healthier lifestyle is today. Thanks to technology and better education on what constitutes a healthy lifestyle, people are living well into their 70s and 80s, as opposed to the average lifespan of 50 just a century ago.
So, quit smoking. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Schedule a physical with the family doctor and ask for all age-appropriate health screenings. Begin an exercise routine. Life as a senior citizen should be – and can be – active and healthy. |
